Are we playing that right? Valve horn performance through the hand horn lens in 19th Century orchestral solos.
Presenter: John Cox & Jeffrey Snedeker
Many 19th Century orchestral solo passages, scant of interpretative marks that were clear to hand horn players, are now interpreted and performed differently by modern performers on modern instruments. This lecture/demonstration will be a tag-team effort featuring John Cox and Jeffrey Snedeker, and will examine some prominent passages of Beethoven, Berlioz, Brahms, and others in opening discussion of authenticity of understood writing, the transformation to early standard performance practices, and modern practices. Demonstrations will be made on hand horn and valve horn, and maybe a few other horns thrown in for good measure.
